- Sounds good to me but there are more and more pessimists.
- How about a little encouragement, like this one:
-
- When you get the license for AmigaOS you could put the Workbench (which, in
- its current form, is neither up-to-date nor a valuable secret) under GPL
- (with the limitation that AT and OEMs, of course, can still distribute
- Workbench and derived work without source code).
- This way you'd show that you're commited, get some work done and make some
- programmers happy. There could be some programming guidelines, a module
- interface for the new Workbench and some library APIs (w3.library,
- java.library). All these things should be specified by VIScorp/AT and(!)
- discussed/enhanced by the Amiga community afterwards (before they become
- standards). The programming guidelines should keep PPC and memory
- protection/virtual memory in mind.
- When the standard is ready several authors/work groups could implement
- libraries and modules and the best implementations might become part of
- AmigaOS 4.x (and be rewarded with a very high-end PPC Amiga).
-
- Some ideas:
- - job window (like the Caldera Desktop or NetScape's download window,
- just a bit different): shows copy operations (including http/ftp
- download) and more. FTP server should be ftp-mounted, of course
- (OS/2 Merlin will have this feature, too).
- - New Icon type: URL (a link to file somewhere in Cyberspace or a
- local file). Maybe with a cache strategy in the tooltypes array,
- like: CACHE_DECAY=5days, REMOTE_DATE_CHECK=FALSE, RELOAD=ASK
- - "Execute command" window: with history, AppWindow, "Stay Open", etc...
- - automounter: a devicehandler which adds all Storage/DOSDrivers
- which have tooltype AUTOMOUNT=TRUE and mounts the real driver
- on first access.
- - w3.library (not the one from the w3 consortium). A shared library
- with basic support for web browsers. There are already many web
- browsers; the authors might be able to split some of them into a w3
- library and a w3 module (for Workbench). A doubleclick on an URL icon
- opens a new window (which is controlled by an instance of the w3 module
- if the filetype is HTML). There should be a http: handler (similar to
- tcp:) and, maybe, even a w3 datatype.
- - GUI Menu: (classic (1.x), standard (2.x), 95 (guess), OpenLook) would
- be nice, too (but that's a (low priority) task for AT)
- - java.library (Has somebody asked Motorola/IBM if the PPC will get Java
- support, like some Sparc chips?)
-
- And in case Project Walker will live: How about a rendering competition?
- Put a walker 3D object on AmiNet and give a Walker to the best Walker
- artist which have put some color on it (in exactly the colors the walker
- in the image has, of course :-)
